CHILDRENS EYE TEST

When should I get my child’s eyes checked?
It is recommended for children to have their first Eye Examination around the age of 3 and then every year routinely up to the age of 16. If you have any concerns before then, you should of course visit us earlier. We adjust the tests used depending on the child’s age and ability e.g. using picture charts instead of letter charts and using more objective tests.

Should I get my child’s eyes tested even though they are not complaining of anything?
Yes absolutely! It is now widely known that visual issues can lead to misdiagnosed problems with reading and counting, with many people believing the child is struggling academically, when in fact they just can’t see very clearly. They may not always notice themselves if there has been a change in their vision, so it’s often routine eye examinations that discover something is not quite right.

At The Optical Gallery we allow plenty of time for children’s eye tests as we understand visiting the Opticians can be a daunting experience.

As an Independent Opticians we have no time pressures from a head office telling us how long we can spend on each appointment, therefore we will take as much time as needed to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for all our little patients.

Does my child need glasses?
If you notice your child sits more closely to the TV than usual, or if they hold a book closer than normal, they may have Myopia (short-sightedness) or Hypermetropia (long-sightedness) respectively.

Children’s eyes are even more susceptible to UV damage than adults. Wearing Sunglasses regularly from a young age can help to prevent UV related eye problems later in life. Sunglasses are available with and without prescription lenses.

Children's Glasses
We have a great collection of Glasses for children so they can feel confident and happy wearing them. We even design our own Ashton Riley Compact glasses for our little patients that are trendy, functional durable.
