We Are Staying Open!

You may be saying, ‘Why would I want vintage eyewear when there is a whole world of new eyewear?’

Over the past year the world has been in lock down, and there is not a whole lot to do. Like many of you, I have found myself getting home of an evening and watching Netflix , Amazon Prime or browsing YouTube…It does not take long to get through series’ and movies and found myself going back in time watching old films and music videos. As an optician you can not help but examine peoples eyewear, it can tell you a lot about ones character or portray an image and I was fascinated and when I’m fascinated about a subject I delve deep.

These glasses were so cool, they were iconic. My favourite actors and musicians of all time were wearing beautiful eyewear for fashion. Eyewear I have not seen in years, that you can not readily purchase.

Tony Montana played by Al Pacino in 1983’s Scarface wears Carrera model 5622

Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels from the iconic 80’s Hip Hop group Run D.M.C wore Cazal 607’s

Vanilla Ice in his hit song ‘Cool as Ice’ wore Jean Paul Gaultier 56-8202

Tupac Shakur wore on his album cover ‘Loyal To The Game’ Jean Paul Gaultier 55-3175

Clogs wearing turning in my head…I am not a fan of how major designer brands manufacture eyewear these days as many of my clients already know, but there was a time when they did take pride in their designs and manufacturing process. Niche eyewear is what I specialise in and vintage eyewear if you can get a hold of it, is a niche. I was having so much fun in my research that I had to find a way to introduce this to my clients.

It took a year to network and research, but i finally managed to source from enthusiasts and collectors new old stock. meaning products from the past that have never been sold.

The thing that hooked me the most about vintage pieces a part from who wore them, was the design manufacturing of them. The intricate details and materials used which has been lost over time.

The Optical Gallery has always been a gallery for niche unique pieces of eyewear, and our vintage collection is no different, but to us these luxury pieces are like rare jewels of history. We decided to put them in category all of their own. The Optical Gallery’s ‘Eyewear Vault’,  specialising mainly in sourcing only rare, prestige material, iconic pieces from designer manufacturers of the 80’s, 90s and early 2000’s. Brands such as; Vintage Jean Paul Gaultier Sunglasses, Vintage Cazal Eyewear, Vintage Christian Dior, Vintage Hilton Eyewear, Vintage Matsuda, Vintage Alpina, Vintage Cartier Eyewear, Vinatge Fred Lunettes to name a few.

It so happens that it is becoming a massive trend for superstars to be wearing vintage eyewear. The reason for it is it is hard to come by and they want to express an individual unique personality.

Be sure the next time you visit us, to check out our Eyewear Vault.
